Episode 34. Everyone agrees that China’s rise and transformation over the last few decades has been absolutely amazing. Napoleon had once remarked about China “Let her sleep, for when she wakes she will shake the world”. It seems China has re-awakened, and it is making its presence being felt all around the world. When we look at the overall recorded history of the world, which goes back several thousand years, Asia has been the most important region of the world. For nearly two thousand years, until the mid-1800s, China, and India, were the biggest economies of the world. In many ways the last 200 years of European dominance have been an aberration. Human civilisations and nations are like living organisms, they have life cycles. Some evolve into new nations and cultures and some totally disappear from the face of the globe. China represents a large nation and a civilisation, which has gone through several cycles and has had many ups and downs. China is the only ancient civilisation to fall down several times and rise again to enter the modern world. One of the most important distinguishing features of China is that it is a civilisational state, unlike many other states in the world. For about two and a half thousand years there has been a Chinese nation using a Chinese language. China has had a continuing experience of civilisation rivalled in duration only by that of ancient Egypt. Dr Mohammed Iqbal the host of Living History will explore the rich history of China in a four part programme with his panelists Arif Ahmed and Yousaf Aftab. Part 1 of this 4 Part series, which will cover the period from the Xia dynasty- the earliest dynasty to the Sui dynasty which was replaced by the Tang Dynasty in 618 CE.

Reason needs to be balanced with emotion, which has traditionally been seen as an obstacle to knowledge than a source of it. The script will explore their role as a source of knowledge and their positive role in our mental lives.

Episode 37. This is part 4 of this 4 part series, which will cover the rise of Modern China after the end of the Qing dynasty in 1912 and how it became an economic powerhouse.

Episode 15. After a child’s first day of school, often one of the first things parents ask is, “Did you make any friends?” From that day onwards until the rest of their lives, friendships play a central role in dictating how a person navigates their life, often in a positive way in terms of improving their quality of life, but also sometimes detrimental when roped into the traps of peer pressure and people pleasing. Historically, in the western society women have been rooted against each other and widely portrayed as competitive, jealous and incapable of getting along, many children’s fairy tales being prime examples. But as we explore in this episode of Sisters on Air, this narrative is far from the truth for Muslim women who have a unique perspective when it comes to friendships.

Poets for Peace

Episode 27. The Theme for this show is ‘Persecution’. And in the next half an hour you will get to hear a five poem of different styles of poetry from people on this theme. There are some people, tribes, communities, all around the world which are being persecuted for different reasons, quite often because they are seen as weaker or a threat of some kind, whether the threat is religion, caste, ethnicity, their social status or the colour of their skin. And we witness this being continually repeated throughout history by people, groups, countries and nations in some way or form. Strangely enough, all of the poems I received on this theme focused on the persecution on Muslims, however I hope this show will give you a small example of the pain felt by some of those being persecuted, and perhaps even move you, or allow you to see the whole of mankind with a more compassionate heart, regardless of who they are. The first poem is from the very talented poet Sister Faiza Kiran, a truly poetical jewel with her inspiring poem from Hartlepool, titled Paradise Lost. The next poem is quite specifically about the persecution of Ahmadi Muslims, from a wonderful poetical star the acclaimed poet Zafar Bhatti from the midlands in Leamington Spa with his poem titled ‘The Silent Voice’. This is then followed by another poet also from the Midlands, from the aspiring young Sabahat Ahmad, full of talent who reads his wonderful poem titled Sunset with such admirable gallant and paints the grim reality of those being persecuted. A wonderful poem is next, about the treatment of Muslims in Palestine, a story of the bondage of its subjects by those bringing closer its frontline, from an Imam, Mansoor Clarke who is a Missionary of Islam, with his very moving poem that which would make any human very emotional. The final poem is from the acclaimed poet Muddabir Khalid who brings an inspiring style on the dire persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community who are being forced to live in a state of exile, being put to trial, without release, living a life in exile for their beliefs.

Phoenix of Al-Andalus: The Divine Return of Islam In our second episode of this 2-part documentary we trace the spiritual rebirth of Islam in Spain — not through conquest, but through compassion, prayer, and prophecy. From the golden age of Al-Andalus to the silence following the fall of Granada in 1492, this episode captures centuries of loss, longing, and divine promise. It follows the sacred journey from the prophetic words of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to the revival sparked by the Promised Messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as), in the East, and carried westward by devoted pioneers like Chaudhry Fateh Muhammad Sial and Maulana Karam Ilahi Zafar. With the historic establishment of the Basharat Mosque in 1982, the first since the Reconquista, and the continued visits and guidance of Khilafat, the documentary unveils a quiet revolution: a return not of empire, but of faith. Through heartfelt interviews and historical narration, this documentary reveals how Ahmadiyyat has become Spain’s hidden heartbeat — the long-lost verse now restored to the melody of its soul. It is a tale of divine love rekindled, a prophecy fulfilled, and a dawn that, once risen, shall never set again.

Episode 30.The Theme for this show is ‘Her Majesty the Queen’. On the 8th of September 2022, Queen Elizabeth 2nd died in the United Kingdom, at the age of 96. She had reigned for 70 years and had thus become the longest reigning British monarch in history.  Upon her passing, she was succeeded by her eldest child, now known as King Charles III. The country and the world paid countless tributes to this noble Queen in almost every way, and we shall now hear a few poetical tributes which I hope will give you a small essence of the great monarch that she was.  The first poem is from the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, who had written this to mark the Queens death. It has two verses, or stanzas and nine lines, and the first letter of each line when taken together spells out Elizabeth. It is read very eloquently by brother Munir Rafiq and is titled ‘Floral Tribute’. The second poem is from Sir Ian Duncan Smith, Member of Parliament in England, who read a tribute to her late Majesty the Queen in the House of Commons on the 9th of September 2022 where he also quotes some poetical verses. The third poem was written by the poet Joanne Boyle following the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II which seems to encapsulate the feelings of the nation and is being read by the talented sister Faiza Mirza.  We then hear the National anthem which was sung on the 12th of September 2022, after King Charles III gave a historic address to MP’s in parliament for the first time where he paid tribute to the Queen The next poem has some ancient background and is actually about Queen Elizabeth the first, so it’s almost 500 years old, and is believed to have been written by William Shakespeare. Apparently he wrote this poem at the back of an envelope and this was probably composed as an epilogue for a performance of a play in the presence of the queen. The poem is titled: “To the Queen" and is being read by brother Salim Ullah. Our final piece for this show, is a special prayer for an equally special Queen. A prayer which epitomises the love that one person has for the whole of mankind and one that is extended to even the Queen. In 1897, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who claimed to be The Promised Messiah (peace be upon him), wrote the book Tohfa-e-Qaisariyyah, which translates ‘ A Gift for the Queen’, which he wrote on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. We shall hear the English version of a portion of this beautiful prayer within this book which was recited in six languages.

Episode 32. The Theme for this show is ‘World Crisis and the Pathway to Peace’. We shall be looking at teachings which provide the practical means of establishing peace by delving into the 9 fundamentals to establish everlasting peace that have been shared by the fifth califh of the head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in his book titled ‘World Crisis and Pathway to Peace’ which is a compilation of the speeches that he had delivered to world leaders. The first poem is a translation of a persian poem by the great poet Hafez Shirazi of the 14th century whose collected works are regarded by many Iranians as a pinnacle of Persian literature. His poem is about the recognition of the creator and titled ‘Footprints’ and is read very eloquently by brother Mobashar Khan from Aldershot in the UK. The second poem is titled ‘Pathway to Peace’ and is from the very talented poet sister Rizwana Aziz from Southwest London, and brings focus to a very important point in establishing peace which is the need to have Absolute Justice. The third poem is from the very wise intellectual words of sister Bushra Khan, a Physician from East Sussex, UK, with her poem titled: Global Family, and focuses on another vital ingredient in establishing global peace, and that is the need to have global unity among nations. Our fourth poem focuses on another aspect needed to attain global peace, and that is the need to reject extremism. and from sister Ruttab Noor from Canada with her beautiful poem titled: Pray for the World. Another vital component in establishing peace is the need for equality, including economic equity, and the next poem was written by one of America’s most notable contemporary poets, Maya Angelou, who captures an essence of inequality in a unique and profound manner. The poem is titled, ‘I know why the caged bird sings’, and is delightfully read by young sister Adan from Washington, USA. Eradicating poverty is also vital in establishing peace, and the next poem paints the grim reality which many children are faced with across the world. It is written by Francis Duggan and titled Poor Children, and superbly read by young brother Yusuf Ahmad.  Another component of establishing peace is the need for nuclear disarmament and the elimination of weapon profiteering. The final poem highlights encapsulates the dire consequences of a nuclear bomb. This poem was written by Robert Ilson, titled ‘Going Splat’ and is being wonderfully read by young sister Miss Aroosa Akram from Slough UK.

Episode 34. The Theme for this show is ‘Jesus and Islam’. The prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) is mentioned at numerous places throughout the Holy Quran, so, if you really love Jesus, and want to know more about him, then you need to read about him in the Holy Quran, as without reading about him in this most widely read book on Earth, you can never really say that you know him. The first poem come from the inspiring words of sister Faiza Kiran with her poem titled ‘The Game of Trinity’, and share the true teachings of Jesus and his belief in the one God. The second poem is actually a Christian hymn, and a Hymn for that matter which happens also to be the most famous Hymn of all times. "Amazing Grace" was published in 1779 by the English Anglican clergyman and poet John Newton and is without a doubt the most famous of all the Christian and secular folk hymns, with a message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God. The Third poem is from the acclaimed poet Furqan Mehmud from Fitchburg, Massachusetts in the USA with his poem on the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) titled - Eli Eli Lama Sabakh thani. And just by way of introduction, this poem is based around his final whilst words on the cross, where he cried with a loud voice ““Eli, Eli, lama sabakh thani” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34) The fourth poem may come to many as a bit of a shock. Why? Because there is quite a lot to take on, and the evidence quoted stands on solid rock. Eloquently written and presented by the acclaimed poet Dr Bushra Khan with her poem titled: “Jesus Christ, son of Mary”. The final poem was written by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah. The Messiah that was expected to follow the messenger of Allah, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and that would revive Islam, and to bring back the lost teachings of the pure Islam, just as Jesus’s mission was to bring back the lost teachings of the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). This poem was originally written in Urdu, and the English translation is presented which provides just an essence of the original poetical gems. The poem is titled: “Death of Jesus of Nazareth”.

Episode 19. This is Part-2 of where we shall be listening back to a very special ‘Live Poets for Peace’ event which took place online, that we just could not keep to ourselves. And where, by the grace of God, 14 very acclaimed Muslim poets took part, who were from various backgrounds, with various styles and shared their poetry on various aspects of their belief in Islam. During this second part of that event, we shall be hearing from the remaining acclaimed poets with titles such as: •Noah’s Ark •Sorry you just missed him – which talks about the advent of the Promised Messiah •Love and praise of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) •Our Jihad •Freedom •The Pain of Muhammad (peace be upon him) •And finally ‘Humanity’ This was a live event, so there were times when the sound wasn’t as perfect as it usually is on this show, but I’m sure you’re going to see past a few of the ups and downs, but do bear with us as it does very quickly improve.
